Micah House Receives Medal of Honor

The Micah House after-school program in Redlands recently received the San Bernardino County Education Medal of Honor in the Volunteer in Action/Service Group category.

The award was presented by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools office.

This is the 20th year the county schools office has awarded Education Medals of Honor, recognizing recipients for volunteer work, for being partners in education with businesses or government agencies and for excellence in education for individuals.

Micah House has provided after-school services for school-age children of north Redlands for the past decade, “with a robust and active spirit of volunteerism,” according to a news release from the county schools office.

Micah House has two sites, one on Chapel Street with program manager Dianna Lawson and the other on Oxford Drive with program manager Myra Meharry. Hannah Pavoni is the Literacy Coordinator for both sites.

Micah House is organized through the Trinity Community Foundation and provides free tutoring and spiritual, emotional and social support for at-risk youth.

Brad Mason, assistant superintendent of human resources for the Redlands Unified School District, wrote his doctoral dissertation about the connection Micah House has established in the community.

“Altruism is a lost art in most places, but it can be found in large quantities when it comes to the workers at Micah House,” he wrote in the nomination of Micah House.
